Despite the havoc wrought by the original SARS-CoV-2 virus, hope for a return to normalcy set in amongst the general public by the summer of 2021. This cautious optimism was short-lived due to the rise of Delta and Omicron sub-variants, highly contagious mutated strains that quickly became predominant around the world. While these extraordinary surges pushed US hospitals to the limits once again, our healthcare system proved more resilient than in the first wave due to the decreased severity of Omicron infections, effectiveness of vaccine rollouts, and new treatments. The onset of COVID-19 saw a seismic shift in the US healthcare industry as hospitals braced themselves for a historic pandemic. As the first wave unfolded, healthcare resources were marshaled towards fighting the pandemic, delaying many elective surgical procedures as hospital beds were prioritized to serve COVID patients. Many patients also postponed routine preventive care such as colonoscopies during this period. Then, most ordinary care resumed in the latter half of 2020 as case numbers, and the strain on hospitals, declined.

Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) are a rapidly growing, safe, convenient, and inexpensive alternative to surgeries performed in a hospital. Many patients seeking lower costs—or simply to avoid the stress of a hospital setting—are increasingly turning to ASCs for their surgical procedures. While the ASC market is quickly expanding, access to these outpatient facilities remains highly unequal across the country. Many residents of rural areas live extremely far away from the nearest ASCs.
