As the first wave unfolded, healthcare resources were marshaled towards fighting the pandemic, delaying many elective surgical procedures as hospital beds were prioritized to serve COVID patients. Many patients also postponed routine preventive care such as colonoscopies during this period. Then, most ordinary care resumed in the latter half of 2020 as case numbers, and the strain on hospitals, declined.
