Despite the havoc wrought by the original SARS-CoV-2 virus, hope for a return to normalcy set in amongst the general public by the summer of 2021. This cautious optimism was short-lived due to the rise of Delta and Omicron sub-variants, highly contagious mutated strains that quickly became predominant around the world. While these extraordinary surges pushed US hospitals to the limits once again, our healthcare system proved more resilient than in the first wave due to the decreased severity of Omicron infections, effectiveness of vaccine rollouts, and new treatments. Patients struggled with delays and disruptions in elective medical care and procedures as these variants roared through the country, yet there again appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.

The onset of COVID-19 saw a seismic shift in the US healthcare industry as hospitals braced themselves for a historic pandemic. As the first wave unfolded, healthcare resources were marshaled towards fighting the pandemic, delaying many elective surgical procedures as hospital beds were prioritized to serve COVID patients. Many patients also postponed routine preventive care such as colonoscopies during this period. Then, most ordinary care resumed in the latter half of 2020 as case numbers, and the strain on hospitals, declined.
